ABSTRACT

When using cathodic protection on coated pipelines, end users must consider the problems that exist if the coating disbonds (loses adhesion). Many in the pipeline industry assume cathodic protection will solve their external corrosion problems without truly understanding the relationship between the coating and cathodic protection. Cathodic protection (CP) current is very effective when it actually has a path to the pipe metal. Most external corrosion on pipelines is caused by disbonded coatings that shield CP, not lack of CP.

Abstract

This paper investigates the applicability of cathodic disbondment (CD) test at higher temperatures, i.e., up to 150C. This paper also presents different factors affecting applicability of the CD test at higher temperatures. It was found that CD Experiments are relevant for high-temperature coating evaluation up to 150C. Maintaining temperature of the experimental pipe section simulates conditions as those of hot pipes. Slow evaporation of water occurs. The rate of water evaporation decreases in the presence of soil – the extent of which depends on the type of soil. Conducting the experiments in an autoclave is not an adequate way to conduct high-temperature CD tests because it does not simulate the temperature differentials that occur under pipeline operating conditions. While conducting long-term experiments care should be exercised to avoid evaporation of electrolyte. Evaporation can be prevented or minimized by refluxing the electrolyte, replenishing the electrolyte, or by covering the experimental set up. The thickness and thermal conductivity of a pipeline coating affect how much heat is transmitted from a hot pipe section to the soil it is in contact with.

Title: External Corrosion Control of Northern Pipelines Influence of Construction Conditions on the Performance of Coatings

ABSTRACT

The design of coatings must be adequate to protect pipelines under long-term, severe environmental conditions, including the extreme climatic conditions that will apply in the North before the pipe is installed and operation begins. Practices and standardised methodologies for evaluating and qualifying pipeline coatings for application in northern pipelines are discussed. Results from laboratory and field experiments, carried out under the conditions to which coatings will be exposed during construction, are presented. Based on one-year laboratory experiments in which samples were exposed to temperatures as low as -45o C and three-year data from the field experiments, it is concluded that Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards CSA Z662, CSA Z245.20 and CSA Z245.21 adequately cover evaluation of coatings for northern pipelines. However, in order to evaluate the effects of low temperatures, the specimens should be exposed for at least four months. Coatings qualified by CSA Z245.21 system B1 and B2 are less affected by exposure to low temperatures than those qualified by CSA Z245.21 system A1 and CSA Z245.20.
