Scanning (special details): To look at quickly without careful reading, often looking for a particular thing.

In scanning, you have to look for key words. In the example, the key word was a figure or number. A key word may be an adjective, a noun, or a verb.
In scanning, you go quickly through a text to find a specific piece of information, you go through a passage quickly in order to get a general idea of what it talks about.

Skimming (general idea): In skimming you will read quickly in order to get the gist of the text and to spot relevant bits to come back to later. You ignore the details and examples.

Skimming and scanning may be used together. At the same time you are skimming a text, you may also be scanning it for some specific detail or bit of information.
