Description

The Brick Bay House is an enquiry into where a site begins and ends; how to define the edges of the project; and the way landscape may be inhabited. Firmly dug into the earth and composed as a simple L plan, its low form recollects modest farming buildings and the idea of an ‘Elegant Shed’.

The house was designed for a family of five, with the clients wanting a house that responded to the contours of the land with a relaxed sense of connection to the rural surroundings. The house is located on the road to Snell’s Beach on a 4 ha section, that’s steeply rises to the west with views to Kawau Bay and a main road along the south western boundary.

The house negotiates the contours of the site with the private areas staggering down the hill to the south, creating a courtyard, and providing protection. The L plan forms a barrier to the road above on the south west boundary, blocking noise and giving privacy. The north deck opens to the east and west allowing afternoon sun to penetrate the living areas. The open plan living areas under the gable roof have porch enclosures to north and east that frame views to Kawau Bay.

The facade of Macrocarpa board and batten wraps the house with a beautifully textured grain that gives a natural warmth to the façade, registering time as its colour changes. The louvered frame to the walkway gallery provides shade in the summer and protection in the winter. The environmental benefits of timber was vital to the project, with timber being locally sourced and milled in small runs from Riverhead shelterbelt trees. Waste was dealt with on site with sawdust used for the garden and farm, and off-cuts for firewood and furniture.

Taj Mahal as a Mirror of Multiculturalism and Architectural Diversity in India

Abstract

India is known as having one of the most cultural, ethnical and religious diversities in the world. Being shaped by its long history, unique geography, diverse languages, religions, music, dance, architecture, customs and traditions which vary from one place to another within the country, it nonetheless possesses a commonality and unity. India’s architecture represents a fusion of different cultures and its architecture metaphorically strives to overcome cultural and religious differences.

This paper studies the Taj Mahal as a case study of cultural fusion and diversity. Taj Mahal marks the zenith of Moghul architecture and expresses a fusion of various structural traditions. These traditions include Persian, Central Asian, pre-Moghul Indian and European architecture. Early Moghul rulers like Akbar Shah chose assimilation and incorporation rather than completely subjugating and eliminatingthe Pre-Islamic culture of India. The architectural diversity seen throughout India is a reflection and representation of the diversity and multiculturalism seen in Indian society. By scrutinizing on the Taj Mahal monument, we observe how multiculturalism in India has had strong effects on cultural identity of India including its architecture.

ترجمه چکیده:

هند کشوری است که بیشترین تنوع فرهنگی، قومیتی و گوناگونی مذهبی را در جهان به خود اختصاص داده است. این کشور با وجود قدمت تاریخی، جغرافیای منحصر به فرد، گوناگونی زبان، دین، رقص و معماری و تنوع آداب و رسوم، از اشتراک و انسجام ویژه ای برخوردار است. این تلفیق و یکپارچگی فرهنگی را میتوان در معماری هند به خوبی مشاهده کرد و معماری به نحوی استعاری کوشیده است تا بر تفاوتهای فرهنگی و دینی فائق آید.

مقاله ی حاضر تاج محل را به عنوان نمادی از تنوع و تلفیق فرهنگی در معماری مورد مطالعه قرار میدهد. تاج محل محصول اوج شکوفایی معماری در عصر گورکانیان هند است که تلفیقی از سنت های معماری گوناگون از جمله معماری ایرانی، آسیای میانه، هند پیش از مغول، و معماری شاه جهانی را به نمایش میگذارد. پادشاهان نخستین گورکانیان، همچون اکبر شاه، جذب و تلفیق عناصر فرهنگی دوران پیش از اسلام را بر طرد و حذف آن ترجیح دادند. تنوع معماری که در سراسر هند مشاهده میشود بازتابی از تنوع فرهنگی جامعه بشمار میرود. تحقیق و پژوهش درباره ی تاج محل به ما نشان میدهد که تنوع فرهنگی در هند چه تأثیر شگرفی بر هویت فرهنگی هند از جمله معماری آن داشته است.
