High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites

Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann | ISBN: 0750693991 | edition 1995 | PDF | 569 pages | 26,1 mb

High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties.

This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures

Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 144190445X | edition 2009 | PDF | 416 pages | 12,2 mb

Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures discusses the topic of dynamic loadings and their effect on material and structural failure. Since dynamic loading problems are very difficult as compared to their static counterpart, very little information is currently available about dynamic behavior of materials and structures. Topics covered include the response of both metallic as well as polymeric composite materials to blast loading and shock loadings, impact loadings and failure of novel materials under more controlled dynamic loads. These include response of soft materials that are important in practical use but have very limited information available on their dynamic response. Dynamic fragmentation, which has re-emerged in recent years has also been included. Both experimental as well as numerical aspects of material and structural response to dynamic loads are discussed. Written by several key experts in the field, Dynamic Failure of Materials and Structures will appeal to graduate students and researchers studying dynamic loadings within mechanical and civil engineering, as well as in physics and materials science.

ASM Handbook Handbook, Ninth Edition: Volume 13 - Corrosion

ASM Handbook Handbook: Properties and Selection: Irons and Steels

By American Society for Metals

* Publisher: Asm Intl

* Number Of Pages:

* Publication Date: 1978

The book is organised into three main sections. The first deals with ferrous metals, covering carbon and alloy steels, cast irons and stainless steels. The more highly alloyed stainless steels, which are often classified as super stainless steels or as part of the body of corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs), are included as proprietary or non-standard stainless steels. This conforms to the approach used in the earlier volume but perhaps their importance could have warranted a separate section in this update.

The next section addresses non-ferrous metals and specialty products, giving an update on common and not-so-common metals and alloys. Many of the entries under specialty products were not in the original handbook, such as brazed and soldered joints, metallic coatings, clad and amorphous metals, and metal-matrix composites.

The third part on environmental performance of non-metallic materials is new. This could have been expanded further given the use of plastics, ceramics, refractories and concrete in aggressive applications. There is, for example, no chapter on thermoplastic materials. There is coverage of protective coatings and more information on organic coatings can be found in the ferrous metals section

Vladimir V. Mitin, Dmitry I. Sementsov, Nizami Z. Vagidov, "Quantum Mechanics for Nanostructures"

Cambridge University Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0521763665 | 448 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB

The properties of new nanoscale materials, their fabrication and applications, as well as the operational principles of nanodevices and systems, are solely determined by quantum-mechanical laws and principles. This textbook introduces engineers to quantum mechanics and the world of nanostructures, enabling them to apply the theories to numerous nanostructure problems. The textbook covers the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, including uncertainty relations, the Schrödinger equation, perturbation theory, and tunneling. These are then applied to a quantum dot, the smallest artificial atom, and compared to hydrogen, the smallest atom in nature. Nanoscale objects with higher dimensionality, such as quantum wires and quantum wells, are introduced, as well as nanoscale materials and nanodevices. Numerous examples throughout the text help students to understand the material.

M. F. Bukhina, S. K. Kurlyand,"Low-temperature Behaviour of Elastomers"

Brill Academic Publishers | 2007-11-30 | ISBN-10: 9004157204 | 187 pages | PDF | 3 Mb

Results of the studies of two leading Russian researchers in the field as well as of other Russian and foreign specialists are presented in this book. The nature and development of two physical processes - glass transition and crystallization determinig low-temperature behaviour of elastomers are under consideration in connection with the structure and composition of elastomeric materials. The effects of deformation, pressure and temperature on these processes are viewed. The contribution of different factors in frost-resistance of elastomeric materials and articles is discussed as well. Specific features of low-temperature behaviour of all existent rubbers are systemized. Furthermore, the possibilities of increasing the frost-resistance of different types of elastomeric materials and articles by means of optimization of composition and design are considered.

Binding: Hardcover

Product Description:

The Fourth Edition of this classic textbook is a complete and authoritative introductory text on the thermodynamics of materials. With a new chapter (Chapter 14) and two new appendices providing thermodynamic and thermochemical data, the Fourth Edition includes extensive references to scientific reviews and original articles.

Introduction to the Thermodynamics of Materials is used universally as an introduction to the application of the thermodynamic method to understanding the behavior of materials systems.

Aimed primarily at third-year undergraduate students of metallurgy, metallurgical engineering, ceramics, or materials science, this book will also be useful to graduate students and working professionals in need of a reference or a refresher course. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors.

NEW IN THE 4TH EDITION:

- A new chapter covering Phase Diagrams for Binary Systems in Pressure-Temperature-Composition Space

-Two new appendices: Exact Differential Equations and Generation of Auxiliary Functions as Legendre Transformations

- A CD containing thermodynamic properties of 50 commonly used compounds. The data and descriptive material on the CD enables students to make detailed thermodynamic calculations involving materials processing.
