It is an alloy of Fe and C in which all is carbon, chemically combined with Iron carbide (Fe₃C).
Cementite is very hard and brittle constituents. When fractured, white cast iron gives bright white surface.
It contains C = 2-3.5%, Si = 0.5-1.5%, Mn = 0.2-0.8%, S


Properties:-


- White cast iron is hard and brittle.
- It is not machine able.
- It has excellent abrasive/ wear resistance.
- Shrinkage 1/8 inch/ft (.i.e. 1mm/100mm).
- If cast iron rapidly cooled in mould than free carbon will go in combine form (.i.e. Fe₃C) and give rice to white cast iron.
- By using fairly low silicon content, cast iron may be made to solidify as white iron.
- White iron castings can be made in sand moulds.
- White cast iron also be made on the surface of a gray iron casting provided the material is of special composition.
- The solidification range of White Cast iron is 2550-2065 °F.


Application:-


- White cast iron is raw material for the production of malleable cast iron.
- For manufacturing those components which are hard and wear resistant.
