Product Description:

This revised third edition of a bestselling metallurgy text examines the behaviour of materials under stress and their reaction to a variety of hostile environments. It covers the entire scope of mechanical metallurgy, from an understanding of the continuum description of stress and strain, through crystalline and defect mechanisms of flow and fracture, and on to a consideration of major mechanical property tests and the basic metalworking process. It has been updated throughout, SI units have been added, and end-of-chapter study questions are included.

Mechanical Metallurgy (Materials Science & Engineering)

Reviews:

The Bible of material science, October 12, 2000

Reviewer: cmpst52 "cmpst52" (Denton, NC United States)

This book covers the entire scope of mechanical behavior in a single volume! How Dieter accomplished his, I can't imagine. But he did.

He covers everything, from the fundamentals of strees and strain, through dislocation theory, basic deformation and fracture, and the whole scope of metal-forming operations. If you need it, it's in this book.

Two complaints:

1) There is relatively little coverage of computer modeling, FEM, etc. These are the future of engineering, and Dieter needs to get on the boat when (if) he writes a fourth edition.

2) The index is USELESS.

These two faults don't change the fact that this is one of he most important single books ever written in the field of material science.

Thorough and comprehensive, December 31, 2005

Reviewer: Newton Ooi (Phoenix, Arizona United States)

Metallurgy is one of the oldest established branches of materials science, and science in general. Yet many of the underlying principles, such as dislocation theory and plasticity, have only been explored within the last 100 years or so. As such, there is a wealth of information in metallurgy that one could learn. This book by G. Dieter is one of the better books to use to learn about metallurgy. Coming in at 800 pages even, this book is a thorough study of the principles behind mechanical metallurgy and is appropriate for both students in the field and practicing engineers. The book provides complete mathematical treatments of numerous subjects within mechanical metallurgy, including crystallography of defects, thermodynamics of plastic flow, kinetics, etc... The book is somewhat old-fashioned in that it leaves out more modern topics such as the use of computer simulations in metallurgy. Because of this, the book does not deserve 5 stars. But due to its breadth and coverage of other topics, it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

Physical Metallurgy, Fourth Edition (Three Volume Set)

By R.W. Cahn

  • Publisher: North Holland
  • Number Of Pages: 2888
  • Publication Date: 1996-02-01
  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0444898751
  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780444898753

Product Description:

Hardbound. This is the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1965. The first edition had approximately one thousand pages in a single volume. This latest volume has almost three thousand pages in 3 volumes which is a fair measure of the pace at which the discipline of physical metallurgy has grown in the intervening 30 years.

Almost all the topics previously treated are still in evidence in this version which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous edition. All the chapters have been either totally rewritten by new authors or thoroughly revised and expanded, either by the third-edition authors alone or jointly with new co-authors. Three chapters on new topics have been added, dealing with dry corrosion, oxidation and protection of metal surfaces; the dislocation theory of the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds; and (most novel) a chapter on polymer science for metallurgists, which analyses the conceptual mismatch between met

Summary: ideal source of information...

Rating: 4

... when you already have a basic understanding of the subject.

This book is very useful as introduction to physical metallurgy, but students and researchers familiar with the subject will find it a condensed and concise reference.

Summary: This book is a FANTASTIC reference text

Rating: 5

One look through the index will show you all you want to know. Check out this list of random buzz words from metallurgy and physics:Phonon Spectra, Rutherford backscattering, Spinodal decomposition, TEM bright field imaging, magnetic susceptibility, Kikuchi patterns, Phase diagrams, Van der Waals bond...

Isn't that great? For anybody doing any sort of work related to metallurgy, this text represents an excellent source for information that is general enough for daily use, but specific enough to be useful. Every chapter is very well written and can stand alone without the rest of the text. There are several volumes to this text, I believe, so be sure to find all of them.

Powder Metallurgy Technology

By G S Upadhyaya

  • Publisher: Cambridge International Science Publishing
  • Number Of Pages: 165
  • Publication Date: 1998-01-01
  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1898326401
  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781898326403

Product Description:

A need has been felt for quite some time for a textbook exclusively on powder metallurgy technology for students as well as practising engineers. There are books on scientific aspects of powder metallurgy, but details of technological aspects are not available. The emphasis has been not to treat the present book as a handbook, but as a handy textbook. The existing books either deal with the subject too elaborately or leave out some of the recent but important technological developments. Although this is essentially a textbook, it is presented it in such a way that it will also be of use to designers and engineers in a variety of fields. The author has not included details of sintered alloys and products in order to contain the book within reasonable proportions. These topics shall be discussed by the author in another future publication. The boundary between powder metallurgy and ceramic technology is gradually getting difficult to be drawn. With this in view, the book can be of use to ceramic engineering students as well. The detailed outline of various chapters in the book is given in Chapter 1 (Introduction). The overview of the subject has sufficient breadth for an introductory course while providing enough depth to prepare a student for further study.

Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Stainless Steels, the first book in over twenty years to address welding metallurgy and weldability issues associated with stainless steel, offers engineers, scientists, and students the most up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of these topics currently available.

The authors emphasize fundamental metallurgical principles governing microstructure evolution and property development of stainless steels, including martensitic, ferritic, austenitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardening grades. They present a logical and well-organized look at the history, evolution, and primary uses of each stainless steel, including detailed descriptions of the associated weldability issues.

Coverage includes the latest information on:

Common stainless steel alloys and their composition

Physical and welding metallurgy of different alloy systems

Mechanical properties of welded stainless steels

The technology and uses of "super" stainless steel alloys

Dissimilar metal joints and weldability issues

Methods for evaluating weldability

Real-world solutions to weldability challenges

In addition to describing the applications and limitations of stainless steels for welded construction, the text also addresses common failures in welded stainless steels associated with fabrication and service exposure, and how such failures may be avoided.
